David Lynch est un cinéaste, photographe, musicien et peintre américain né le 20 janvier 1946 à Missoula, dans le Montana, aux États-Unis.

Lynch a reçu trois nominations aux Academy Awards comme Meilleur réalisateur pour Elephant Man (1980), Blue Velvet (1986) et Mulholland Drive (2001). Il a également reçu des prix au Festival de Cannes et à la Mostra de Venise.

Tout au long de sa carrière, Lynch a employé de nouvelles approches dans sa façon de construire un film. Son style est devenu facilement reconnaissable pour de nombreux spectateurs et critiques. Les films de Lynch sont connus pour leur coté surréaliste. Il a développé un style cinématographique unique, qui a été surnommé "lynchien", et qui se caractérise par son imagerie onirique et sa conception sonore méticuleuse. En effet, l'imagerie parfois violente et surréaliste de ses films lui confère une réputation de "déranger, d'offenser ou de mystifier" son public. Lynch porte un regard sombre et halluciné sur la réalité humaine inquiétante qui se dissimule derrière la lisse mise en scène sociale au sein des petites bourgades américaines (en particulier dans Blue Velvet et Twin Peaks) ou de Los Angeles (dans Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive ou Inland Empire).
